Stepping into PR: Agency Life Lessons
Stepping into the world of PR after graduating, I was excited but unsure of what to expect. Fast forward to today, a few months into my time at Coldr, I’ve gained insight into a range of industries from consumer lifestyle brands to charity and third-sector organisations. I’ve learned how to tailor communications for different audiences while staying true to core values of community and purpose-led storytelling.
Whether it’s media monitoring or social content planning, every day has brought new challenges and lessons. One of the biggest lessons? Adaptability is key. PR moves fast, and being able to switch gears — whether it's responding to breaking news or refining a client proposal — has been invaluable.
Of course, stepping into agency life has had its challenges. Navigating fast-moving projects while ensuring messaging stays sharp has been a learning curve, and getting to grips with PR jargon takes some time too. But the team’s support, and willingness to share insights, answer questions, and encourage fresh perspectives has made all the difference.
One of the biggest highlights for me at Coldr was supporting the planning of our International Women’s Day event. Seeing weeks of research and preparation come to life — watching brand and marketing groundbreakers connect over breakfast, engage in meaningful conversations, and leave feeling inspired — was incredibly rewarding. Even better? The buzz afterwards, with attendees already asking about the next one. It was a real “this is why we do it” moment.
I know I’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible in PR, but one thing is clear: I’m excited to keep learning, growing, and making an impact. Looking ahead, I’m particularly drawn to the intersection of culture, brand storytelling, and purpose-driven campaigns. I want to explore the way PR can shape conversations, shift perceptions, and create real connections even further.
For anyone considering a PR internship, my advice? Break the ice! Say yes to every opportunity, ask questions, and trust the process — you’ll surprise yourself.
