My client has been hit with a cyber attack. How do I craft the first response?

Our Senior Consultant Tara is featured in PR Week’s ‘Ask the Experts’ Column, offering her take on crafting a response to a cyber attack:

“Your initial response sets the tone for everything that follows, so speed and clarity matter. Let leaders know that you don’t need the full forensic report to communicate: your audiences want to know you’re aware, you care, and you’re taking action.”

She shared four key tips to keep front of mind when communicating during a cyber crisis:

  • Cut the jargon: Less is more when it comes to technical information. A human voice helps build trust when uncertainty is high.

  • Meet people where they are: Don’t bury your response on a company website, use channels that your audience engages with.

  • Pause before you post: Review all upcoming communications activity to avoid accusations of inconsistent or tone-deaf messaging.

  • Set the rhythm: Stay ahead of the narrative by being proactive with communications, providing updates on a regular basis.
